SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 16-year-old boy shot on a South Salt Lake sidewalk Tuesday has died.
South Salt Lake police confirmed that the boy, whose name was not released pending notification of extended family, passed away just after midnight Tuesday.
The fatal shooting was one of two on Tuesday in Salt Lake County that happened within a half-hour of each other. As of Wednesday afternoon police said there was no evidence linking the two incidents.
In South Salt Lake, the teen was shot just after 4 p.m. near 300 East and 3100 South, according to police. No arrests have been made and no motive for the shooting has been released. Police believe the boy may have been shot near his school.
Shortly after that incident, another shooting with multiple injuries was reported near 3510 W. Parkway Blvd. in West Valley City.
Charles Baker, 49, of California, was killed. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the torso and a 38-year-old man was shot multiple times, according to West Valley police. One of the victims was in critical condition Wednesday, but police declined to say which one. The other was stable, police saidd.
West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku announced Wednesday afternoon that a 15-year-old boy had been taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention in connection with the shooting. She said the boy is believed to have “fired a gun” during the incident. Vainuku did not know if the teen was the only person who fired a gun or if he hit anybody. It was unknown what charges the 15-year-old was being investigated for.
Detectives determined there was some sort of altercation just prior to the shooting “involving multiple people including juveniles and adults,” Vainuku said, including the three that were shot.
