Canucks sign GM Jim Benning to contract extension


The Vancouver Canucks have signed general manager Jim Benning to a contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.

Benning took over the Canucks’ front office in 2014, replacing Mike Gillis, and has been steering the club through the rebuilding process. The GM, known for his strong scouting ability, has brought plenty of young talent into the system to create one of the league’s deepest prospect pools. The emergence of rookie Brock Boeser, whom Benning drafted late in the first round in 2015, has given Canucks fans hope that the young team is heading in the right direction.

As the rebuilding club approaches the deadline, questions had begun to rise about Benning’s future with the club as he was without a contract beyond the 2017-18 campaign.
