Now in its ninth season, American Ninja Warrior has quietly become one of reality TV’s most successful shows. Given the grueling nature of the obstacle course, it may not have been surprising that most of the early contestants were men. That changed, however, when video of contestant Kacy Catanzaro conquering the course went viral on YouTube. (Since its posting in 2014, it’s been viewed more than 15 million times!) Catanzaro was the first female to make it to the national finals, and her accomplishment seems to have spurred other women to follow in her footsteps. American Ninja Warrior co-host Kristine Leahy says she’s seen a lot more women vying to become contestants in subsequent seasons, and she’s hopeful that the trend will continue. American Ninja Warrior airs Monday nights at 8/7c on NBC.
